© 1999 Journals of Reproduction and Fertility 1359-6004/99 $15.00 Leptin is a peptide produced by adipocytes and achieves hormonal status by virtue of its secretion into the bloodstream (Considine et al., 1996). It is a potent satiety factor (Campfield et al., 1995; Halaas et al., 1995) but may serve other functions, such as the regulation of neuroendocrine systems and the gonads. This brief review will outline the sites within the hypothalamo–pituitary axis at which leptin may influence reproductive function, indicating the location of leptin receptors and detailing effects within the hypothalamo–pituitary–gonadal axis (Fig. 1). Since leptin may affect the secretion of various hormones, the way it influences reproduction could either be direct or indirect (Fig. 1). For example, leptin could regulate the secretion of growth hormone (GH) or prolactin (see below), which could have indirect effects on the gonad (Adashi, 1995; Linzer and Arey, 1995).

Neuroendocrine integration of nutritional signals on reproduction.
Reproductive function in mammals is energetically costly and therefore tightly regulated by nutritional status. To enable this integration of metabolic and reproductive function, information regarding peripheral nutritional status must be relayed centrally to the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GNRH) neurons that drive reproductive function. The metabolically relevant hormones leptin, insulin a...
متن کاملPmn-16: The Effect of Environmental Contaminants on Testicular Function
Male reproductive health has deteriorated considerably in the last few decades. Nutritional, socioeconomic, lifestyle and environmental factors (among others) have been attributed to compromising male reproductive health. In recent years, a large volume of evidence has accumulated that suggests that the trend of decreasing male fertility (in terms of sperm count, quality and other changes in ma...
متن کاملP-95: Influences of Metabolic and Nutritional Status on IVF Outcomes
Background: The aim of our study was to determine the metabolic profile: glucose, triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL) and cholesterol (CHT) in women undergoing ART (Assisted reproductive technology) cycles and estimate its effect on In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) outcomes Materials and Methods: Forty three women undergoing IVF treatment were included in the study. Patients were all...
متن کاملAssociation between pregnancy nutritional status with spontaneous abortion
Background Spontaneous abortion is the most common adverse pregnancy outcomes.A possible link has been suggested between dietary factors deficiency and reproductive risks including abortion MaterialsAndMethods A case-control study was conducted. The case(n:331) experienced a spontaneous abortion before 14 weeks of pregnancy while the controls(n:331) were healthy pregnant women over 14 weeks of ...
متن کاملDo male house mice (Mus musculus) discriminate between females that differ in nutritional status?
Most studies of mate choice have focused on female preference for male traits because it is generally assumed that since males provide less parental investment they are not choosy. However, if males suffer missed opportunity costs by mating with lower quality females, selection should favor males with the ability to discriminate among females. We tested the hypothesis that male house mice (Mus ...
